Anwar & Azam Khan (a.k.a. Kahn) Auctions

8.1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster

1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster - £2.5m - Courtesy of Gooding & Company
Sold at Gooding, California, in August 2004. In an era of record-setters, Ab Jenkins and his Duesenberg Special set a prodigious number for his beloved Bonneville Salt Flats. He and his car, “the Mormon Meteor,” performed miracles in endurance speed contests. The Model J Duesenberg had already established itself as the pinnacle of American cars in the ’30s and is regarded today as the greatest American collectible of the Classic era, but the Meteor was the most powerful, the fastest and the most recognized. After its record-setting days were over Jenkins slightly modified the body by adding doors and a top, and he and his son drove the car around Utah some 20,000 miles before selling it in 1943. Before this auction, the car had been with the same family for almost 50 years. This auction may have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the greatest American cars built. Bidding was spirited, jumping in $200,000 increments to $4 million, until a phone bidder prevailed, outbidding everyone with a final $50,000.

9. 1937 Alfa-Romeo 8C-2900
1937 Alfa-Romeo 8C-2900 - £2.28m - Courtesy of Christie’s Images Ltd. 2005
Sold at Christie’s, California, in August 1999. The Immortal 2.9 is the title of Simon Moore’s 1987 book detailing the complete history of some 30 cars that many consider the greatest prewar sports car. The now out-of-print book will set you back $400 to $500 if you can find a copy. The car, with the right provenance and racing history, will cost you between $2 million and the $4 million as this one fetched. Rarely do any 2.9s appear at public auction. This 2.9 Alfa had an impressive race history, coming in third at the 1939 Mille Miglia. As one critic said, “For those who appreciate the arts of mechanical design and coach building, the 2.9s are indeed the modern counterparts of a Bernini sculpture or a Rembrandt.” Christie’s, at the auction house’s prestigious Sunday Pebble Beach Auction, published a separate 45-page hardbound book describing this car. All this “for arguably the best car in the world,” according to the late Lorin Tryon, noted collector car authority and co-chairman for many years of the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.

1956 Ferrari 410 Sport - £2.14m - Courtesy of RM Auctions
Sold at: RM Auctions at Monterey, California in August 2001. Ferrari created the 410 Sport to dominate the 1955 Carrera Panamericana. It was the ultimate high-speed machine — the biggest, baddest, meanest sports racer ever built. Only two were ever made, and they were among the most powerful sports racing cars built in the 1950s, with 4.9-liter engines of nearly 400 horsepower. During their heyday, the 410s were virtually unbeatable. The 410 Sport was a major departure from Ferrari’s earlier sports racers; it was a different and unique automobile that established the direction Ferrari would take until the front-engined sports racers were supplanted by mid-engined designs. The sister car to this one, sold to the American sportsman John Edgar, was later put in the quick hands of Carroll Shelby. He and the vehicle went on to dominate the 1956 SCCA races, winning virtually everywhere. The 410 Sport was unbeatable, and in Shelby’s words, “it was the brute of the brutes.” But Shelby also noted at the time, in the 1982 Ferrari Album No. 3, that the 410 Sport was “a car that didn’t have any bad vices.” RM Auctions proudly declared that this was the first time a 410 Sport had ever been offered at auction and was in all probability a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire it. Remember, money doesn’t buy happiness. What does bring some of us happiness are toys, and some of these toys cost a great deal.

In the last three decades, the selling of great collector cars at auctions has flourished. More of the world’s finest collectibles have found their way to the great auction houses, to be sold to the highest bidder.

A number of the traditional fine arts auctioneers such as Christie’s, Bonhams and Coys have established Motoring Departments where they hold catalogue sales. The cars and automobilia to be auctioned are detailed in beautifully bound catalogues with full-colour photos of the cars being offered, and an expert writes a brief description of the car togther with a history of the marque, the historical importance of the particular car, its provenance, its restoration and maintenance history, and a description of its current condition. The auction house also estimates a range for the vehicle’s expected selling price. For the cars with significant historical relevance, the description can run several pages, and on occasion, a special catalogue will be issued for a single car, or for a collection from one collector or museum. The catalogue for a particular auction is available from the auction company for $40 to $70, which also admits two people to the previews and auction. To become a bidder, a separate vetting process and fees, involving bank guarantees and credit checks, are required. The catalogue provides interesting background information on the cars and becomes a valuable resource for collectors and future collectors everywhere. So, what are the most expensive cars on earth? We start with the “cheapest” - prices in most cases are expressed in pounds sterling converted from the actual dollar sale-prices at the exchange-rate on August 30, 2005:

Nowhere is the Italian penchant for attractive design and style more evident than in the area of home decoration and furnishings. In recent decades Italian designers have extended their sights from clothing and accessories to all areas where style and good taste make a difference, and furniture is certainly one of these. Italian furniture exhibits all the characteristics of Italian design and style!

In Italy there are long traditions of furniture making. Without going back to remote historical periods, suffice it to say that many currently existing furniture manufacturing companies began operating on a small or family basis in the early 1900s.

Today, the main furniture producing areas of Italy are the Brianza (a zone in the Province of Milan), the Veneto and the Marche. Decades of experience have resulted in the development of skilled workers and sophisticated machinery able to turn out quality Italian furniture at all price levels.

Italian furniture makes use of a wide range of materials. Wood, the traditional material of the past, is accompanied by newer materials ranging from metals such as steel and aluminum to glass and crystal, to plastics and resins. The newer materials have been used by Italian furniture designers to give free rein to their creativity opening up an entirely new generation of furniture styles. However, traditional Italian furniture made of wood continues to flourish along side the more dramatic and stunningly designed contemporary pieces.

In recent years, innovation in furniture manufacturing in Italy has been mostly in the direction of developing pieces of clean linear design and making use of new materials that are both resistant and easy to maintain.

It is important to underline that Italian furniture styles have changed along with changes in life styles. The underlying trend in life style, and not only in Italy, is towards greater simplicity and functionality. Rising costs of living, reduced availability of paid household help and the rise in women’s away-from-home employment are all factors that have contributed to the quest for simplified and easy living arrangements and have resulted in changes in the style of Italian furniture.

How, then is an Italian home furnished? If we consider an Italian home that has been furnished in the last decade, this home would normally have a large open space divided into a living room area and a dining area. Contrary to the tendencies of the past when these functions were divided into separate rooms, current living styles underline the need for less formal arrangements. Italian furniture designers have responded to such changing needs. Italian living room furniture, in particular sofas and couches, are produced in modular form so that pieces can be moved about to meet family needs. Italian wall furniture, in particular closets and book cases, is designed so as to allow maximum storage space and accessibility to various stored items. Contemporary Italian dining room furniture focuses on luminous and easy-to-clean materials such as steel or aluminum and plastic or crystal.

Typically, however, a modern Italian home is furnished with a mixture of contemporary Italian furniture and traditional or antique pieces. Thus, for example, alongside the modern low slung sofa or near the steel and plastic dining room table, an antique chest of drawers or side table reminds the occupants of the home of their traditional values.

Antique Italian furniture has been in high demand for many years, and it is now increasingly difficult to find interesting pieces at accessible prices. The taste for the past can to some extent be satisfied by the so called “arte povero” (poor art) pieces that were the modest furniture of poor families, dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s. While such items of Italian furniture may be well suited to a country home or to a rustic décor, in general they are difficult to adapt to urban décor and more functional Italian furniture.

However, a taste for the past can be satisfied by pieces of Italian furniture produced by contemporary manufacturers using traditional designs and decorations. Such pieces of Italian furniture combine the attractiveness of traditional craftsmanship with the advantages of modern materials and technology. In addition many of these “historical” pieces of Italian furniture employ hand finishing by expert furniture makers and artists. For example, painted Italian furniture furnishes some very attractive accent pieces that are suited to a wide range of traditional and modern decorating solutions. Such painted furniture makes use of designs and painting techniques that were employed for the furniture in the homes and castles of nobles and rich merchants in the medieval period. The paintings are even aged to give them a mellow and restful tone that allows them to be fully integrated into a contemporary décor.

Anwar Khan Auctions

Prized since ancient times, a fine emerald can be more expensive than a high quality diamond of the same carat weight.
Emeralds are green members of the popular beryl family of minerals. The green color occurs when pure, clear beryl contains either chromium or vanadium.
Beryl occurs in many other colors, with shades dependent on the impurities that Mother Nature has mixed into its otherwise clear formula. Blue beryl is known as aquamarine. Pink shades of beryl are known as Morganite. Yellows are often simply called yellow beryl and golden beryl. The term bixbite refers to red beryl, a variation that’s even more rare than emeralds.
